can has tights

I ordered black and brown tights from We Love Colors a couple of weeks ago. I was reluctant to order from them, since they had a three-week shipping delay due to Halloween, but they were the only retailer I could find that had solid tights in my size.

They arrived in three days of my order, to my pleasant surprise. Yay for no shipping delays after all! The tights are cute, although I feel like I should have a frilly embroidered dress and wee white mary janes to go with them. I played it safe with black and brown this time, but if I like them with use and they're warm (and they last a while) I'll buy some crazy-colored ones. Of course as soon as they arrived the weather got bearable again, so I haven't done anything with them other than try them on, but it'll be cold again next week and my cute new librarian skirt is calling my name.

Next on the "ugh, where can I find this?" fashion list: cute, warm, don't-resemble-a-bag, under $40 V-neck sweaters for work.

Can I ask you a question about the practicalities of plus-size tights? I have no problem finding thighs in "regular" sizes, L or XL is usually enough, but I don't like the way the waist cuts into my flesh creating bulges on top and underneath the waistline. I don't mind my big belly but I don't like it looking like two bellies one on top of the other! The overall result is particularly weird when wearing dresses. Have you had this experience with plus-size tights? Do you thing going up a couple of sizes would solve my problem?

Alicia, the problem with going up a couple of sizes is that the legs are going to bag and sag and you'll have wrinkles around your ankles! Tights tend to get longer as they get larger, so if you are short at all it can really compound problems.

Does your belly do the bifurcated thing in general? Mine does. It doesn't matter if I'm wearing tights or am totally naked - it's just how my stomach is built at this point.

You might want to try the smallest size in the plus size tights - the waist band might just be stretchier. But I wouldn't suggest going up multiple sizes.

The Rotund is definitely the tights expert around here - I'm a total newb! In addition to what she said, control top tights may have enough body to keep from creating bulges.

The Maroon color from We Love Colors is really beautiful, and a nice, safe way to introduce yourself to brighter colors. I'm still working up the nerve to wear the Emerald ones I purchased in the same order.

I too have that bifurcated stomach effect- the fat seems to naturally deposit just above and below the waistline. Some tights are worse than others, and on the bad ones I've actually cut out the waistband. There's enough spandex through the hips to keep them up, but getting rid of the waistband gets rid of the double-stomach look as well as that really uncomfortable stricture (especially annoying because I could always feel it rolling as I bent over or sat down). I wouldn't advise going up too many sizes because then the tights might bag in the legs.

I find tights and pantyhose tends to want to roll down my legs. I actually have a couple spanx-like panty-girdles to wear over pantyhose.

So how do We Love Colors hold up? How thick and/or sturdy are they?

I need tights to be thick enough that, when they get holes in the feet, they don't get runs as well. And ideally, they shouldn't wear out between the thighs within a single wearing (and I don't have an extreme chub rub issue, but some tights just die on me because they're so thin that they stretch to near nothing).

I love the look of those Silver Splash tights, but for $15, I need to know they'll last the winter.

Miriam, I've only worn them once so far, so I can't really say yet. Check back with me in the spring. ;) (I'll post again when they break, so we have a date range.) So far they seem relatively sturdy, a lot more so than pantyhose but less than I would imagine cable-knit tights to be. I have to be careful not to put my thumbs through them when I put them on, but that's a known clumsy move on my part. I don't honestly know if they'll run if a hole does get poked in them; you may want to ask the fatshionista LJ community about that.

I would say going up one size may help with the two-belly issue. I find that, because I'm so short in the torso, I have to yank the control top right up under my bra strap so it doesn't roll down. My stomach is naturally bifurcated right now - I've lost a lot of weight fast and have extra skin that I can't get rid of - and I find that doing this (pulling the control top up that high) holds everything in place. Nobody can tell, generally, that I have a two-belly belly. Things look smooth and flat doing this, too.

Miriam, I managed to snag my maroon WLC tights on my ring the very first time I wore them, and thought that they were done for. Nope- there's a tiny little snag hole in the thigh but they didn't run. It's entirely possible that I was just lucky, but considering that I went through two pairs of pantyhose last weekend just by putting my finger right through, I doubt it.

I also just bought black and brown (also got the Rubine and Spruce green in the same order) tights from them! I wear their smallest size, and find that I can pull the waistband up to my bra and avoid double tummy... those things hold up incredibly! Other plus sized tights always bunch at my ankles, even if I buy the exact size recommended for my height and weight, but these don't.

Thanks to everyone who commented on my two-belly problem!

The rotund - yes, my belly is bifurcated per se, so the double belly effect is not just the tight's fault. They tend to make it worse, though, because the waistband also cuts into my sides and back, creating an all-round efect. I used to yank the waistband up to underneath my breasts, but nowadays it tends to roll down during the day and it's really uncomfortable. Thanks for the advice on larger sizes and potential baggy legs, I hadn't thought of that!

i-geek - I will definitely try cutting the waistband off a pair of not-so-expensive, not-so-new tights and see what happens. I usually wear a pair of panties on top of tights or pantyhose to keep them in place, so rolling down shouldn't be a problem

Hey! Bright colors are fun! I have the neon green (my favorite!) bright blue, kelly green and one of the splash colors from we love colors... They seem to hold up pretty well, but the fishnets, while more sturdy than ordinary ones, still ripped in the crotch, probably a little too small for me, about the second time I wore them. I find that the waist bands on the "we love colors" tights are very comfortable compared to most others... I am also glad to see I'm not the only one with the two-belly issue...
